Beta Lactase, also known as Beta-Galactosidase, constitutes a pivotal enzyme that enables the hydrolysis of lactose into glucose and galactose. This enzyme is widely distributed in the human intestinal tract, milk, as well as microorganisms including yeast and lactic acid bacteria. Within the human digestive system, intestinal lactase is mainly produced and secreted by the epithelial cells of the small intestine, which contributes to decomposing lactose present in dairy products. Inadequate secretion of this enzyme leads to incomplete lactose digestion: undigested lactose undergoes fermentation in the intestinal tract, producing gas and organic acids, and thereby inducing symptoms associated with "lactose intolerance" such as abdominal bloating and diarrhea. |
